Lego Custom Knights

LEGO Custom Knights – A Childhood Passion

My passion for LEGO Castle goes back as far as I can remember.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a wonderful family, and sometime in the early 1990s my father managed to buy a collection of second-hand LEGO from an older boy. I still have a surprisingly vivid memory of my mother washing all those LEGO bricks and minifigures in the bathtub of our family home.

Among those bricks were my very first LEGO knights, from the legendary yellow LEGO Castle of the late 1970s. I still own a few of those old, flat knight figures with the distinctive crown emblem on a pink background. To me, they are priceless pieces of childhood history.

The First Custom Knights

Even as a child, I was never entirely satisfied with leaving my LEGO knights exactly as they came. I loved creating things, but even more than that, I loved modifying weapons, armour and accessories to give each knight a unique appearance.

My interest in historical miniatures and miniature painting encouraged me to experiment. Then I watched Braveheart, and decided to start painting my LEGO knights' armour. Those were some of my first attempts at customizing minifigures.

Rediscovering LEGO Castle

As I grew older, the hobby gradually faded into the background. I discovered video games and spent more and more time exploring their worlds and battles. Still, every now and then I would return to my beloved LEGO knights.

Around 2015, I discovered BrickWarriors and its range of alternative helmets, weapons, armour and accessories. It rekindled my enthusiasm, and I have never really stopped customizing my knights since.

Custom Shields, Heraldry and Fabric Flags

With some experience in graphic design software, I began creating my own heraldic designs for shields. I also found a way to make custom flags from fabric, giving my little medieval armies their own banners and identities.

Today I combine original LEGO pieces with compatible accessories and handmade details. The tools may have changed, but the pleasure of creating something personal is exactly the same as it was when I was a child.

Here are some of my knights and medieval creations, from earlier experiments to more recent custom pieces.

A Gathering of Banners – My Custom LEGO Medieval Army

One of my latest LEGO Castle creations brings together custom knights and infantrymen beneath a colourful collection of heraldic banners. I have recently added more foot soldiers to the ranks, continuing to expand this little medieval army.

More knights, shields and banners are always on the way!
