Playmobil Dragoons, Redcoats and Hessian-Inspired Mercenaries
One of the things I enjoy most about collecting and customizing Playmobil soldiers is bringing different units together to create a small historical army.
In these photographs, my mounted Playmobil Dragoons march alongside British Redcoats and a group of soldiers wearing blue coats with red details. In my imagination, these blue-coated troops could represent German mercenaries, perhaps inspired by the Hessian soldiers who served alongside the British during the American Revolutionary War.
I have always been fascinated by the appearance of an army on the march: the colourful uniforms, the long lines of muskets, the horses, and the contrast between cavalrymen and infantry soldiers.
My Playmobil soldiers belong to a collection that I have gradually expanded and customized over the years. Combining different units allows me to experiment with military formations and imagine them taking part in a much larger campaign.
For me, this is one of the greatest pleasures of the hobby: transforming a collection of small plastic figures into a miniature army with its own character and history.
Behind the Scenes: An Outdoor Diorama
These photographs were taken outdoors, using natural light to give the marching column a more realistic atmosphere. The small stone wall visible in the scene is one of my homemade terrain pieces: I made it by pouring cement into silicone biscuit moulds. It is a simple, unconventional way of creating miniature scenery, and I enjoy combining these handmade details with my customized Playmobil soldiers.
