Playmobil Knights Diorama

A group of medieval knights is suddenly ambushed by a band of mercenaries near a marsh in this Playmobil battle diorama.

The mercenaries have the advantage of surprise, but the knights are experienced warriors, accustomed to fighting on horseback. In the middle of the clash, one of the mounted mercenaries is unhorsed and thrown into the muddy water.

Playmobil Knights Ambushed by Mercenaries

For this medieval battle scene, I arranged a group of mercenaries around a small marshy area, creating the impression of a sudden attack on passing knights.

The attackers carry a variety of medieval weapons, while the knights attempt to fight their way through the ambush.

Although the mercenaries have chosen the terrain and the moment of attack, the knights may have the advantage when it comes to mounted combat.

I positioned the camera close to the figures to capture the action from the perspective of the miniature soldiers, with the fighting extending across the entire scene.

Custom Gambeson Made with Printed Fabric

One of the custom details in this diorama is a medieval gambeson, a padded garment traditionally worn beneath armour or used as protective clothing on its own.

I created this miniature gambeson using my usual fabric-transfer technique: printing the design onto special transfer paper and applying it to fabric.

This method allows me to add custom medieval clothing and equipment to my Playmobil figures while preserving the texture of real fabric.

Capturing the Moment of Action

My favourite part of this photograph is the mercenary horseman being unhorsed and thrown into the marsh.

Although the mercenaries have the advantage of surprise, one of the knights appears to have gained the upper hand against a mounted opponent, perhaps thanks to his greater experience in cavalry combat.

I tried to capture the exact moment when the mercenary hits the water, sending a dramatic splash into the air and bringing a sense of movement to the battlefield.

I particularly enjoy creating miniature battle scenes where the figures appear to be caught in the middle of an event, rather than simply posing for the camera.

With a few Playmobil knights, mercenaries, natural scenery and a little experimentation with photography, a single image can tell an entire medieval adventure.
